Before starting the tour, funds were raised with charity dinners and in many shopping centres all around the world.
The target had been to raise 5 million Rand (corresponding to ca. 500.000 €) within 10 days. After 10 days they had raised 8 million Rand; a sum which all participants are very proud of, as with 800.000 € 5.000 children can be fed for 5 years.
The 220 chefs have participated in many events. Charity dinners took place in various cities, the largest of which were held in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg. On the agenda there was not only delicious food, furthermore, there were famous artists and musicians who performed abstaining from their fees and who auctioned off e. g. Mick Jagger’s guitar, a dinner with Nelson Mandela, donated holiday cruises and paintings by African artists.
Unifine Food & Bake Ingredients participated with their Bangkok-located Area Manager for Asia and Middle East, Fritz Mayer. He was part of the pastry team in charge of the preparation of the desserts. The air fares were paid
out of their own pockets, the ingredients were sponsored by Unifine Food & Bake Ingredients and the hotel rooms by the Southern Sun Hotel Group. Their days in South Africa were straining, “18 working hours per day and little
sleep during the night, but in the end it paid off – a really good feeling”, says Fritz Mayer, proudly and contentedly reviewing the result of the event.
